Part Three: Speed and Skill Building

Part Three will in fact be conducted in concert with Part Two, as speed-building may be undertaken whilst studying the advanced theory/medical text.

Part Three will be by digital audio recordings for speed/skill building, plus speed tests, but examinations for high speeds will be by live dictation by arrangement with the IPS (Incorporated Phonographic Society, at the Bishopsgate Institute, London, or the Principal's home office) whose examination fees are currently approximately £9.00 per examination. Liaisons can be arranged directly or through the Principal, Mary Sorene, who is its current Chairman.

Speed advancement (always maintaining accuracy of stroking) is also a very individual achievement. Therefore, the time necessary to complete Part Three, will vary from student to student.

By the time students/participants enter Part Three of training they should have their own steno machine. During Parts One and Two, a training machine will be on loan to students/participants.

For those students/participants who wish to undertake Speech-to-Text work, you will need to undertaking Deaf Awareness Training via Signature, formerly known as the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP). This training may be undertaken at the same time as speed-building. To be eligible for this category you must have achieved CACDP Level 3 Certificate for LSPs working with Deaf and Deafblind People (Verbatim Speech to Text Reporting) or meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member of the British Institute of Verbatim Reporters (BIVR) or hold an equivalent speed qualification, i.e. IPS, Pitmans, CART and
  • have achieved CACDP Level 1 Certificate in Developing Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People and
  • have successfully completed two endorsements by CACDP trained endorsers undertaken during live assignments.  (Source: www.signature.org.uk)

The Deaf Awareness courses may be undertaken at the same time as the stenography course.

Completion of the Course

As soon as students/participants pass a recognised 180-wpm speed test they may be eligible to enter for the British Institute of Verbatim Reporter's  membership examination. (See also their website www.bivr.org.uk)  Students should however be aiming for speeds of 200 + wpm with 100% accuracy of stroking as the computer cannot read a badly-stroked note. Once you pass this examination you will be an  Accredited Court Reporter (CAT) and could undertake in-court training.  You would also then be eligible to go on the BIVR's Reporter Search portion of their website. You could also, as referred to above, undertake the necessary endorsements by Signature (formerly CACDP).   Employment
