Overview

The primary and general objective of the course is to prepare student participants to become stenotype machine shorthand writers with adequate proficiency to work as verbatim reporters capable of producing Real-time transcripts on computer-aided transcription (CAT) equipment.

stenograph

The basic Sten-Ed theory course is conducted over a 12 - 24 month period employing a series of instructional manuals, audiocassette tapes and a computer lesson plan supported by periodic instructional interaction from the Principal or her deputy. The time taken will depend upon the amount of time each student/participant can allocate to training on a daily basis.

Requirements

Each prospective student/participant will be interviewed and tested on the machine and tutorial to consider their suitability for training. You should therefore be prepared to spend at least 2 hours at initial interview.

The basic requirement to be a CAT verbatim reporter (other than 100% enthusiasm) is a good command of English grammar/spelling, good comprehension, reasonable eyesight (with glasses if worn) together with the ability to look at a computer screen, good hearing in both ears with finger dexterity in all fingers and thumbs.
